Local poet, Donna Faulkner is counting down the days to her latest book – In Silver Majesty – is released.
“For the last four years I’ve entered the international Erbacci poetry contest – I’ve been longlisted for the last three years and then this year they contacted me and asked me to put together a proposal to get a manuscript published,” she says.
The resulting book is, In Silver Majesty, a collection of poems that focus on themes of loss and regret.
“I have a slight obsession about looking at life as being temporary,” she explains. “I definitely have an interest in the supernatural. When I was a child, my grandmother lived across from a graveyard and I’ve always had an interest in the spiritual.”
It’s a rich vein for poetry, but Donna says she gets her inspiration from all sorts of places.
“Recently I did the WORD Festival and I was writing a piece about Christchurch. I was sitting looking out and I saw a seagull sitting on a building and just started wondering about what the seagull could see. Images just come to me, and I build it from there. ”
Donna has been writing poetry for about four years and her writing has met with success both here and internationally. She says her work reflects a sense of place that is unique to Christchurch.
“Definitely place has an effect on my poetry. I moved away after the earthquake and after I came back, I really felt that sense of belonging. I incorporate flora and fauna into my work. The things we see every day. It’s about being present and noticing what is around us.”
