As part of NZ Music Month in May, Toi Auaha is hosting Maree Quinn’s sound-based exhibition, The Road is the Site of Many Journeys in its pop-up Reception Space Gallery. In her meditative quadraphonic soundscape, Quinn retraces the sonic echoes of her Whakapapa on the West Coast, exploring the question of how we anchor ourselves in the world. The work engages with the everyday sounds of the villages, townships, streets, paths, rivers, beach and bush, connecting with the Whenua and considerations of what it means to walk on this as a Pākeha. A looped work, it invites the audience to drop in and out of the journey in a form of temporal openness.
Lyttelton based artist, Maree Quinn explores concepts of memory and place, perception and sound, in a creative practice that ranges from painting and drawing to soundscapes and time based media. With a Masters in Fine Arts, Quinn had exhibited visual and sound based work in both Australia and New Zealand. Her art works are held in private collections in both countries with film work lodged in the NZ Arts Council Archive.
