Choose from three simultaneous workshops led by artists Doron Riki-Semu, Sue Pearson and Serene Hodgman, who blend traditional methods with contemporary art.

Try Ribbon Weaving / Embriodery, Textile Printing and Siapo (Tapa) barkcloth making.

Doron Riki- Semu – Tapa cloth making – Doron Riki-Semu (Sāmoa – Falelatai, Salelesi, Asau, Falelima; New Zealand European) is a siapo maker of Sāmoan and palagi descent, hailing from the villages of Salelesi, Falelatai, Falelima and Asau. Doron will take you through the process of Siapo (Tapa) cloth making, this session will be physical as the making of the cloth requires beating.

Sue Pearson – Introduction to Textile Printing – Print with stencils and blocks handmade by Sue on to calico to create your own artwork. Water based textile printing ink will be used in a variety of colours. A celebrated Norfolk Islander, Sue is known internationally for her multi-faceted creative practice as a printmaker, fabric designer, fine artist and book illustrator. Sue’s work expresses her connection to the Norfolk and Pitcairn Island heritages and reflects her rich cultural history, and the unique environment of Norfolk Island and the wider Pacific.

Serene Hodgman – Ribbon Weaving – Serene embroiders and weaves silk ribbon on and through the surface of woven plastic mats, creating vibrant work expressing her identity, contemporising, and paying homage to traditional Pacific making practice. In this workshop you will be guided by Serene to create your own version and learn the techniques of ribbon weaving.
