‘Hooves and Chooks’
Returning to bring some much needed joy and inspiration this winter, The Lyttelton Arts Festival (3–19 July 2026), presents a programme that spans: laugh-out-loud comedy, bold new theatre, contemporary dance, live music, spoken word and poetry, hands-on workshops, films and family-friendly shows for the school holiday crowd.
At a moment when arts and culture funding is being cut nationally, this small but mighty festival run by a passionate team of locals with support from Christchurch City Council boasts an extraordinary 13 world premieres; new works, reimagined collaborations, and shows created specifically for this festival stage. Giving local and regional makers a platform to take genuine creative risks and present their work to hungry audiences.
From the almost sold out opening weekend double bill ‘Hooves and Chooks’, an exciting new collaboration between Rebound Dance Company’s Fleur de Thier and Feminist Clown Posse’s Tessa Waters featuring over 25 local performers. To Ben Brown (Ngati Mahuta, Ngati Koroki, Ngati Paoa) presenting his new book of poems with never before seen illustrations by the late great Bill Hammond and supported by Dominic Hoey. New Music from Ben Woods Group as well as Robin Judkins both with new EPs. Adam Hattaways’ Rolling Stones tribute, Gameshow Roulette, the annual hit machine Keith Preene’s STARS Lyttelton and new theatre by festival faves Joe Bennett and Garry McCormick.
“Art and coming together are more important than ever…When communities are under pressure, culture is often the first thing cut but it’s also one of the most powerful tools we have for connection, resilience and hope.”
