The Free Theatre has announced the passing of founding member Robin Bond who died suddenly last week at his home.
Robin performed in numerous productions including Rounddance (1981), King Ubu (1982), King Lear (1983), 1984: The Future is Now (1984), The Rise and Fall of Mahagonny (1985), The Meeting (1985), Action / Tongues (1985), Lulu (1986), Preversions (1987), A Respectable Wedding (1989), Electra (1983), Salome (1994), Power (1996), Resolution Island (1997), Songs to the Judges (1998), Bakkai / Diotek (1999), The Last Days of Mankind (2000), Kabarett Kabul (2001), My Epitaph (2004), Susn (2004), Philoctetes (2007), and Remake (2009).
He also directed, co-directed and translated a number of works for Free Theatre including Electra (1984), Oedipus Rex / Oedipus at Colonus (1997), Medea (1998) and Antigone (2002).
In the infamous High Court case in 1984 “Free Theatre vs the Arts Centre”, on behalf of Free Theatre and supported by Free Theatre’s lawyers Chris McVeigh and Peter Dyhrberg, Robin donned the same brown suit to take the witness stand, as he wore playing the role of Mr O’Brien Executive Official Minitruth in the production of 1984: The Future is Now (1984). The irony was not lost.
We send our condolences to the family and friends of Robin.
