The multi-award winning visual storyteller Janneth Gil leads a workshop where participants can acquire the unique techniques and approaches she employs to create captivating narratives through photography. In this all-encompassing workshop, you will construct your own visual narrative, as well as develop nuanced visual, creative, and technical abilities. This course will navigate through the development of ideas, researching and taking images; embracing creative momentum and finding meaning; contemplating ethical implications; and exploring the power of photography for advocacy, positive social change, and wellbeing.
This class will take place over four evenings held over multiple weeks, providing you the opportunity to build your body of work between each of the sessions. Janneth will break down her processes, giving you practical advice on selection and sequencing workflows. You will develop and refine your story during a one-on-one session with Janneth and with critique from renowned Christchurch art critic Warren Feeney. The workshop culminates in a group exhibition at Photosynthesis with four of your images printed on cotton rag photographic paper.
This intimate and engaging workshop is open to anyone, from the professional photographer to the curious beginner. No previous experience or talent in photography is required, and any phone or camera can be used. Register before the strictly limited spaces run out.
By the end of the workshop, participants will:
- Be able to generate successful ideas,
- Understand the visual narrative planning process from selecting and researching topics to planning shots,
- Develop gratefulness practice with photography for personal wellbeing,
- Engage in informed and critical self-reflection with the ability to critique peers,
