Brown Town begun as a collective of friends who sought for a stronger sense of belonging in our cities and towns.
Brown Town is flipping the narrative. We create spaces for our stories and knowledge to be shared, to talanoa (especially with kai), and to celebrate who we are through diverse creative mediums.
WHAT WE’RE UP TO
Brown Town is preparing to launch a significant two-part project that will kickstart our non-for-profit services focused on weaving Māori and Pacific communities together.
The second part to our launch will be issued through Brown Town Vol.1, a printed zine amplifying the stories of Māori and Pacific creatives who have experienced life in Ōtautahi. Artists will share their narrative through visual art, photography, poetry, written works, or preferred mediums, exploring the theme The Brown Experience in Ōtautahi and interpreting the whakatauki “Iti noa ana, he pito mata” (From the withered tree, a flower blooms). This zine not only responds to the history of this whenua still impacting our communities, but it also reflects the urgent need and navigation for change.
