This talented ensemble from Rangi Ruru Girls’ High School, with years of collaborative experience across various groups, captivated audiences with their performance of Dmitri Shostakovich’s Trio No. 1 in C minor, taking out the coveted top prize at at the NZCT Chamber Music Contest, the largest and longest running contest of its kind in Aotearoa.
Chloe Jiang (violin), Elise Tian (cello) & Polly Lee (piano) noted that their rehearsals were a joyful journey, marked by moments of serendipity and discovery, particularly as they explored the historical context of this piece – composed at just 16 during a turbulent period in his life, it is a profound exploration of angst, heartache, and despair, reflecting the political unrest and personal turmoil Shostakovich faced.
The ensemble’s interpretation of this emotionally charged work was deeply enriched by their understanding of its background, which enhanced both their performance and connection to the music. The dynamic shifts and dramatic contrasts of the trio presented both a thrilling challenge and a source of great enjoyment for the musicians.
Chloe, Elise and Polly would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Mrs. Kingsbury, their dedicated music director, and to their supportive teachers and parents who played a crucial role in their success. The ensemble’s performance not only showcased their skill but also their deep appreciation for the dramatic and emotional complexities of Shostakovich’s masterpiece.
