Throughout its history, Christchurch/Ōtautahi has had a thriving music scene, in all genres: classical, contemporary, country, rock’n’roll, punk, pop and electronica. This Story Map can only hint at the breadth of music that has emerged from the city. Compiled by Christchurch-born singer and writer Rosa Shiels and AudioCulture, this map is the macro view showing important locations such as venues, studios, stores, and a few homes. Over 100 venues emerged from AudioCulture’s research, so only a small selection could be included. A concentrated look at alternative Christchurch music scenes from 1980 to the 2000s, compiled by Rob Mayes of Failsafe Recordings, will follow in a few weeks.
