Artist in Residence | Research Exchange MAP

Dance

MAP is opening its annual residency program for 2024 at Sutton House on the edge of the Residential Red Zone in Ōtautahi Christchurch. This residency offers 2 artists the resources to go deeply into their own practice and research while also outward reaching through a framework of activities.

The Research Exchange Residency gives artists:

  • the time and space to focus solely on their art, without the distractions of their usual environment;
  • the chance to relate differently within a location, being exposed to a new community, techniques, and materials;
  • an occasion to build long-lasting relationships with other creative individuals;
  • convenience to experiment with new approaches to their work;
  • opportunities to showcase their work to a wider audience.

Artists in residence are expected to engage with:

  • At least 1 workshop each (or combined, or both)
  • 1 combined closing research presentation
  • 1 written contribution to The Map each

The two selected artists will reside at Sutton House during 16th Jan – 25th Feb 2024. The Research Performances will take place consecutively at the end of February and embodiments/aspects of their work will take part in the MAP Resides exhibition at CoCA – Centre of Contemporary Art Toi Moroki in March 2024.

This year’s programme focuses on provocations towards Speculative Futures.
Artists are invited to respond to questions such as – but not limited to:

  • Which worlds would you design/erase/construct/destroy/form/reform/perform/deform?
  • Through what other relationships with time could we move?
  • What if past, present and future met and/or collapsed?
  • Which ways your practice could move us beyond what currently exists into the realms of what could be?

    In the modes of practice, we invite artists to engage with:

  • Time-based works that challenge the conventions of form
  • Consider the possibility of Site Responsiveness, acknowledging the interferences the territory creates in their experience in residence as well as their interferences onto the territory.
  • Be open to Collaborative Contamination whereby the artists in residence work on their own projects while being affected – and affecting – each other’s works in unprescribed ways of collaboration.

Selection of applications will be open between 14 September and 11 October 2023.

Results: 6 November 2023
