Understanding how to respectfully engage with mana whenua and tangata whenua is an important part of creating ethical, meaningful and enduring creative partnerships. These workshop notes and presentation slides were developed from a Toi Ōtautahi workshop led by multidisciplinary creative Juanita Hepi (Kāi Tahu, Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngātiwai, Ngāpuhi). They provide practical guidance on engagement processes grounded in whanaungataka (relationship building) and manaakitaka (mutual respect), and explore what meaningful engagement under Te Tiriti o Waitangi can look like within the arts and creative sector.

Covering topics including Story Sovereignty, collaboration, ethical and relational ways of working, and when and how to seek cultural guidance, the resource offers practical insights, real-world examples and reflective questions to support more informed, respectful and enduring creative partnerships.
