Stoddart Cottage, Diamon Harbour Anita DeSoto returns to Stoddart Cottage Gallery in February to exhibit work from her 2025 residency.
The exhibition, titled She Does Not Fit the Frame, features a series of stunning miniature local seascapes and a suite of small-scale portraits of colonial women in DeSoto’s lush, expressionistic style, which contemplate the erasure of women’s experiences and perspectives across time.
Anita’s spectral, ghost-like characters are painted escaping the confines of their frames through expressive brushwork and layered washes. The walls of Stoddart buzz and murmur with the gaze of these women, turned on the audience. Once quieted voices, reasserting themselves with new authority.
Anita DeSoto’s exhibition, She Does Not Fit the Frame, opens on Saturday January the 31st at 4pm. Anita will give an artist floor talk the following day, Sunday the 1st of February, at 4pm. All welcome.
