Creative resident David Cook traces a journey through 40 years of social documentary practice.
His 2014 Christchurch Art Gallery exhibition and photo book, ‘Meet Me In The Square’, reconstructed a 1980s version of his hometown Ōtautahi Christchurch, exploring the lives of punks, nuns, Ballantynes shoppers and bell ringers.
Photographic adventures include a long-term examination of the largely unseen impact of coal mining in Aotearoa New Zealand. His 2024 residency extends a recent drive to address our housing crisis by co-creating activist artwork with people living in social housing. David’s tenure as creative resident at Te Matatiki Toi Ora The Arts Centre marks a return to his hometown after living in the North Island since 1984.
