Open Studios Artist Residency 2026–2027

Applications are now open!

We’re looking for innovative artists with exciting project ideas to join our shared studio residency at The Arts Village over December 2026 and January 2027.

Running in various forms since 2011, the Open Studios Artist Residency provides selected artists with shared studio space, materials, and the freedom to develop a creative project. We welcome proposals that enrich both the artist’s own practice and the wider Rotorua community.

The Arts Village is Rotorua’s community arts hub, with a long history of nurturing creativity and connection. Our vision is for Rotorua to be a vibrant, creative community where art makes life good.

Over the past 15 years, the Open Studios Project has supported 66 artists through residency opportunities. This year, at least four artists will be selected to take part.

What is an Artist Residency?

An artist residency offers dedicated time and space to focus on creative practice away from the demands of everyday life. Residents have the opportunity to experiment, develop new work, explore ideas, and connect with other artists and the community in a supportive environment.

We’re seeking dynamic and visionary artists with groundbreaking ideas to join us for an unforgettable shared studio residency at The Arts Village from Dec 2026 to Jan 2027. Since 2011, this residency has evolved into a creative haven, dedicated to providing artists not just with essential studio space and a variety of materials, but also with the freedom to explore projects that truly enrich their artistic journeys.
