Watch This Space is pleased to announce Roll Call 2.0 – the second iteration of the group exhibition celebrating Ōtautahi’s diverse urban art community.
Featuring more than 75 local artists, Roll Call 2.0 will explore the role of documentation, influence, reference, process, ephemerality and cultural memory within urban art practices as it navigates the relationship between physical and digital space.
The broad scope of works, ranging from paintings, prints and drawings, to photography, zines, moving image and sculptural pieces, will be framed by ideas around urban art’s preservation, dissemination, transformation, and reinterpretation across artists, audiences and generations.
Urban art’s histories and definitions are both fiercely protected and constantly re-written by an ever-increasing audience, navigating the borders of subversion and celebration, and the discourses that come with that complexity. From photographs and sketches, to scans, zines, screenshots, posts or oral histories, documentation is vital in urban art’s temporary nature: the archive and memory of the culture. At the same time, contemporary urban art exists
simultaneously as material work and its own documentation, raising questions around authenticity, dissemination, process and legacy.
In presenting a snapshot of current trajectories, the threads and evolution of urban art’s lineage and visual language become evident, whether inheritance, reinterpretation, iconoclasm, or even the remote, viral influence of the internet.
Urban art’s complex tapestry presents a rich discourse, and Roll Call 2.0 is an invitation into that conversation.
