July’s Toi Ōtautahi Arts Workshop provides practical guidance on how to respectfully engage with mana whenua and tangata whenua in creative practices and projects. Led by multidisciplinary creative Juanita Hepi (Kāi Tahu, Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngātiwai, Ngāpuhi), this interactive session explores processes of engagement, emphasising whanaukataka (relationship building) and manaakitaka (mutual respect), and what meaningful engagement under Te Tiriti o Waitangi can look like within the arts and creative sector.
Areas covered span Story Sovereignty, approaches to collaboration, working ethically and relationally with others, and why, when, and how to seek cultural guidance and advice. Providing a supportive environment that uses real scenarios and the opportunity to ask questions, the workshop aims to strengthen participants’ confidence in fostering respectful, informed and enduring relationships.
Wednesday 1 July 5.30pm – 7pm Toi Auaha, 5 Worcester Boulevard Free to attend – please reserve your place on what will likely be a very popular workshop here.
Juanita Hepi (Kāi Tahu, Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngātiwai, Ngāpuhi) walks around in a perpetual state of confusion telling yarns to find peace. She is a researcher and lecturer whose work sits at the intersections of Indigenous storytelling, education, and practice, including previously running Te Whare Tapere at Te Matatiki Toi Ora. She has a masters, a graduate diploma and a bachelor of arts. When not being a hearty Ōtautahi arts nerd, hautūtū and māmā, she reads, writes, plays capitals of the world, reflects on determinism and rote learns Māori and Latin names for NZ native plants.
