“Secret Santa” is the pilot of People Like Us, a proof-of-concept sitcom from the Inclusive Performance Academy, featuring disabled twenty-somethings navigating life in Ōtautahi.
Real disabled actors play scripted versions of themselves, bringing authenticity and humour.
Led by Fiona McKenzie (director/writer with Tribeca-screened work) and Jasper Sutcliffe (award-winning film graduate), their past collaboration earned 48Hours finalist and audience awards.
“We were all so excited when we hit 25% in our first week! We know we have to work hard to keep the momentum going but it’s such a positive start and everyone is so happy that our project is exciting other people too. The guys couldn’t be more invested!” say Fiona and Jasper.
Funding will support professional crew, equipment, and post-production to deliver a high-quality pilot. With 19K TikTok followers and a growing platform, this project challenges stereotypes, celebrates community, and offers a joyful, representative portrayal of disability.
