Togetherness Through Craft – This Saturday 20 July

Craft & Object

Come and join the artist known as 6×4 at Toi Auaha from 1-4pm with some sewing supplies and kai.

Bring a craft/sewing project to work on, or just come and have a cup of tea.

No pressure, no expectations, no judgement.

All Welcome.

In an industrialised society we are encouraged to live as individuals rather than interconnected beings. We specialise in the things we contribute to society and our worlds have become increasingly siloed. We long for togetherness, collaboration, and sharing but the systems of modern life often prevent us from meaningfully integrating them into our daily lives.

I believe that craft can be a framework for us to experience togetherness through shared activity. Through the work of our hands, in transforming materials from one state to another, we can in turn transform ourselves. When we come together to do this in unison we can build connections and feel our threads weave into a larger fabric. It is easy to feel adrift and alone when our built environments are a sea of impersonal, faceless objects reflecting nothing of our humanity, reflecting instead the cold uniformity of industrialism that destroys our planet and our communities. I don’t say this out of nostalgia for the past, but out of hope for the future. I believe that craft can bring us together in a time of deep loneliness. When we engage in making we are able to introduce our own voices into the things we interact with. This is not a meaningless act. So often our stories get told to us, about who we are and how we should be in the world, but through the act of making we can tell our own stories. Let us come together and engage in this act as a community. Together we are strong. We are not alone, nor have we ever been alone. We have always had each other and we will always have each other.
