The Toi Ōtautahi Performance and Acting Incubator aims to help local performers refine and extend their skills and develop a new performance project. This programme supports a broad range of performance traditions and disciplines.
You might need support to develop and prepare a new performance work, produce and stage an existing project, or want to improve your industry skills and learn how to pitch to festivals, read a contract, or book a tour, find your audience, etc. Let us know about your performance project and how mentoring would help you achieve your goals.
Groups and/or collectives are welcome to apply. Māori creatives living in and around Ōtautahi and Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū are encouraged to apply.
How does it work?
By participating in this incubator programme, you can expect:
- 5-6 months of mentoring that includes 4-5 one-on-one sessions, and small group sessions with your mentor. Mentoring sessions can be delivered on-line or in person. Some group sessions will be shared sessions with parallel incubators and development workshops.
- help with performance contend, stagecraft, production and delivery and/or industry skills including how to share your work, contracts and copyright, booking tours, audience development, and funding
- opportunities for whakawhānaungatanga and to develop a network and connections between other performers and industry professionals
- support from an Arts Advisor where possible
Eligibility
To apply for the Performance and Acting Incubator programme, you must:
- have experience performing live and/or creating performances for live audiences
- be currently based in Ōtautahi Christchurch
- be able to commit to meeting with mentors and developing your project, which may take place after work hours.
How to Apply:
There will be two opportunities to apply for a mentorship in 2023.
Round 2: Applications open on Monday 16 October and close on Sunday 03 December (for mentorships starting in 2024).
You will be advised of the outcome of your application within 2-weeks of the closing date.

Mentors
Several potential mentors have been identified to support each programme. The final group of mentors will depend on the skills, experience, subject and focus of the participants (mentees), and the mentor’s overall availability. If you know the mentor you would like to work with, please indicate this in your application.
Please note:
- This is not an accredited course and there is no cost to participate.
- Time commitment could be one to a few hours a week-do not give up your day job just yet!
- You will not be paid a stipend to attend.
- This is a pilot programme. We will seek your feedback as we progress through to understand what tweaks can be made to improve your experience and future incubators. Think of yourself as a co-creator.
- We will do our best to match you with a mentor who has experience related to your interests.
- Each Incubator is a contestable programme and there is limited mentoring available.
- There are no age restrictions.
- Your contact information may be shared with mentors and Arts Advisors.
Development Awards
Two projects from each Incubator will be identified for further development support of $2,500.
Mentors, partners, tutors and administrators will select projects.
