Bill Hammond

Paint and Print, Visual Arts

The late, great Bill Hammond was one of Aotearoa’s greatest artists. His distinctive style was immediately recognisable and drew on unique aspects of New Zealand’s past – both environmentally and socially. He was born in Christchurch in 1947 and studied fine arts at Ilam before embarking on a path first as a sign maker, toy maker and musician before turning to painting full time. He started exhibiting his work in 1980 and held his first solo exhibition in 1987.

He was a beloved figure in his hometown of Lyttelton – and could often be found in the now demolished Volcano Restaurant which featured several of his works on its walls – as well as his distinctive design on its logo.

Bill died on the 30 January, 2021.
