Workshop: How to Pack and Store Your Art
So you’ve finished making some art… Now what? Maybe you’re going to keep it, or you might be sending it to a gallery or buyer. Regardless of where your work is headed next, it’s important to take care of it through that process. Sometimes we can be so involved in the making that we disregard the importance of what follows. Storing work, or packing it for the post can make or (literally) break an artwork.
In this session of (Artist) Life School, The Physics Room have invited guest speaker Lydia Baxendell to share expert advice, practical tips and examples of how to safely package and store your art. Drawing from her many experiences as kaitiaki of an art collection—like the time she received a courier delivery of broken artworks wrapped in used socks and undies—Lydia will be passing on her knowledge and skills regarding practical care for different materials and works. Bring your notebook. This event will be audio recorded and subsequently posted on our website.
Following the session we will be sharing some kai, warm soup and bread to keep us cosy on a cold winter evening. This is a time to hang out together, meet other local artists and creatives, and have a good feed. Please RSVP to honey@physicsroom.org.nz for catering purposes.
(Artist) Life School is a series originated by Audrey Baldwin for The Physics Room, currently developed and hosted by Honey Brown. It brings together contemporary artists to further develop professional skills and sets out to answer the curly questions around maintaining a practice out in the world. Ideal for recent graduates and emerging artists, each workshop hosts an industry professional to discuss practical realities of making, resourcing, and showing your work. This is the eighth event in the (Artist) Life School series. We’re always interested in your thoughts on useful topics for future (Artist) Life School workshops – īmera mai!
Lydia Baxendell is Kaitiaki Kohinga Toi, Art Collections Curator at the University of Canterbury’s Macmillan Brown Cultural Heritage Library where she cares for a premier art collection. In her role Lydia regularly provides lectures, tutorials and tours, as well as working on curatorial and research projects. A strong advocate for the arts in Ōtautahi, Lydia is chair of the UC Art Acquisitions Committee, and a selector for the Macmillan Brown Pacific Artist in Residency programme. Lydia has an MA in Art History (University of Otago) and is the author of numerous articles, catalogues and publications. In a previous life Lydia worked in the dealer gallery sector selling art (and some of her soul).
This event is supported by Christchurch City Council / Toi Ōtautahi / Year of the Arts 2023. Further free workshops will be offered in the coming months, please see toiotautahi.org.nz for details.
