The Piano is a space devoted to musical arts, based in the heart of Ōtautahi Christchurch.  The Piano is a place where our community is encouraged to participate, whether through performing, teaching, learning or connecting.

The first building in the Performing Arts Precinct in the heart of Christchurch, The Piano is a purpose-built venue with superior acoustics and intimate spaces that bring audiences and performers closer together.

The Piano’s purpose is to enable artists and audiences to create and discover transformative musical experiences and support the development of musical talent in Canterbury and New Zealand.   Community Arts, Professional Arts, Next Generation Youth and Emerging Artists are all key to the success of The Piano, as are the audiences.

An independent charitable trust governed by a Board of Trustees, the Board is now seeking to appoint a Director.

About The Role:

The Director provides strategic and operational leadership for The Piano, ensuring financial stability and sustainability towards meeting its charitable objectives and strategic goals.  With responsibility for the day-to-day operations, you will lead the small team and oversee management of a pool of regular contractors and volunteers, ensuring a sense of pride and ownership, enhancing The Piano’s culture of excellence.

The Director is also responsible for maintaining The Piano’s reputation and impact in the arts community.

A music qualification or education, experience working as a musical performer, along with skills in working with Xero accounting package would also be desirable.

This is broad role, where your understanding of what performers need, how to curate concert series, how to work with promoters, community and professional artists; meeting the needs of youngsters starting out, emerging artists and the needs of our own artists in residence are all part of the success of The Piano.

This is a full-time role, with variable working hours (some evenings and weekend work).
