Klaudia Bartos
Is a Hungarian born artist based in Christchurch and BA graduate exploring mixed media techniques with an emphasis on surreal and distorted portraiture. She specialises primarily in paint and ink based mediums, used in conjunction with print techniques like monoprint, to create heavily contrasted works that conjure feelings of unease and intrigue within the viewer.
The foundation of her recent work capitalises on the very free form and spontaneous nature of watercolour. She employs heavy use of the pareidolia phenomenon to see and subsequently create facial structure and features within the naturally occurring patterns of the abstract watercolour shapes.
While she is influenced by a wide variety of media from horror movies to dark Romanticism, she mainly takes inspiration from her surroundings and nature. Creating grotesque visages from seemingly innocuous shapes and forms found, for example, in a shadow or a knot in a piece of wood.
